Ben Allnutt (59) and one-time Fareham & Crofton all-rounder Kevin Light (44) revived Hook & Newnham Basics II’s fortunes before Shane Brewer took 5-16 to wreck Gosport Borough’s prospects of winning their round one Southern Premier Division 3 match at the KGV.
The pair were both promoted from the Hampshire League at the end of 2019 and the victory odds were in Borough’s favour when Jacob Harris (3-16) and Ollie Creal (3-30) reduced Hook to 59-5.
Allnutt, eventually ninth out, and Light turned the tide with a century sixth-wicket stand, which helped Hook reach a competitive 183 all out.
Eight overs of Brewer (left) was more than enough for Gosport, who sank to 58-6, with top scorer Lee Harrop (41) his fifth victim.
The Borough tail wagged a bit but Harry Warner (3-21) made the necessary inroads to bowl Gosport out for 129 and leave Hook 54-run winners.
